Karubian Lab

Welcome! Our goal is to link research excellence with real world environmental impact. We focus on northwest Ecuador, a conservation hotspot where an expanding agricultural frontier exists side by side with astounding levels of biodiversity. Active research addresses ecological, behavioral, and evolutionary processes and patterns across differing environmental conditions in birds, plants, and other taxa. We prioritize collaboration and synergies with local partners that help translate basic research into on the ground wins for communities and the environment.

Our Research

We have a close working relationship with FCAT, a grassroots Ecuadorian NGO composed primarily of local residents that operates a major reserve and a suite of environmental projects. We collaborate with FCAT to design and implement research projects that contribute to the well-being of local communities and the environment where we work.

The Karubian lab is a proud member of TIERA, a Tulane-based program that connects FCAT with change-makers interested in linking their learning and scholarship with real world environmental gain. In addition to members of the Karubian lab, each year dozens of students and researchers from around the world participate in TIERA programs to travel to FCAT for field courses, research, or community projects.
