Madisyn Grice is now engaged in a research project investigating the issue of food safety with respect to plankton contamination in the Gulf of Mexico subsequent to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, during the academic year 2023-2024. Madisyn Grice and her research advisor, Mohamed Awad, want to conduct laboratory experiments to examine the presence of cyanobacteria in fish and lake water samples. In order to conduct a comprehensive analysis of cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Pontchartrain and its surrounding bodies of water in New Orleans, it will be necessary to use water quality kits, blue-green algae tests, and Cyanobacteria Pond Water Test Kits.
The project's research aims to investigate the potential contamination of plankton in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This comprehensive approach will provide valuable insights into the extent and impact of cyanobacteria bloom in the affected areas. By studying plankton contamination in different bodies of water, Grice and Awad will be able to assess the spread of cyanobacteria and its potential effects on the ecosystem.
Madisyn has had the opportunity to present her ongoing research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Students this past November, where she was able to educate and obtain feedback from scholars and stakeholders from across the country.
