Hi! My name is Emelia Cooperberg, and I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am a rising senior at Tulane University studying biomedical engineering. In Dr. Khismatullin’s lab, my research focuses on examining the effects of high-intensity ultrasound on CAL-51 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells. More specifically, I am exploring the effects of ultrasound on the tumor suppressor protein, p53, by experimenting on the p53 wild type and knockout versions of the cell types. This involves culturing cells, applying high-intensity ultrasound, and analyzing the results after many days. The primary outcomes I am looking at are cell confluency over time and how the p53 protein is mechanically disrupted at the cellular level. Ultimately, from this, the role of p53 as well as the role of ultrasound on cell apoptosis can be understood.

In my spare time, I really enjoy spending quality time with friends, exercising, photography, traveling, and spending time in nature. Some recent global experiences I’ve had include studying abroad in New Zealand last fall and traveling to Sierra Leone for a prosthetics project!
